Final post of 2011 - Time for some resolutions?

Ah yes, the year that we shall all die! Yay. Bring it on. Nuclear war? Blipping out of existence? Reversion to an early hominid form because we no longer have a calendar to read? We shall just have to wait and see.

This is going to be a few days that will kick me right in the mazard. I need to get my shit together!

I am adding all of our old things to websites for At Every Step, cleaning out my computer, getting shit done yo. Heheh. :D

A Very Bergman New Year

"Conditioned inside and out to the point of no return
to what we may have been without all this shit we were born into:"

Tragedy/Wolves in the Throne Room later this month! Holy crap yes!
I may take the train up to do it. :)

Bringing a couple Bergman movies up to Washington with me :D
Looking forward to seeing mom and dad and spending time with the fam. Trey has a gig New Year's eve and will be checking that out.

Nearly the End (of the year)!!

Well I'm somewhat into lists lately, as those with any 'cultural inclination' are (?); Loved Pitchfork's lists, but getting into some of Stereogum's and Paste's as well. I am incredibly thankful as well that I live in a time where I can spend my morning bathing in said lists instead of having to search for food and potable water. Ha ha ha! Yay for civilization.

I was sick for Christmas but I woke up today feeling rather splendid. Going up to Washington to see mom, dad, and bro tomorrow morn. Gonna try to catch some of a movie now.

Interesting week so far. Kim Jong-Il has died.

Huge fan of Misery Index. Majorly political band with some serious talent that plays uncompromising, bone-crushing speed/death/thrash/grind metal. On a related note, I have been listening to Volumes (their album "Via" rated #1 fan-voted album of 2011 on lambgoat.com) and Vildhjarta's MÃ¥sstaden. I'm strongly dislike the djent guitar tone on these albums, the compression just drives me crazy. When I listen to a band like Tombs or Blut Aus Nord, I simply FEEL a lot more. Much wider palette. Something tells me that this detached, unitive "djent" tone is part of the genre, to make us feel alone, sparse, etc, but I don't like it.

"Caves of raw steel, the modern graveyard.
What human failures promise for us.
Day turns into night."

Need to do my best to get caught up.

What's up with Syria? And we think OWS was bad.. crazy! Oakland doesn't even hold a candle to this crazy shit.

Listening to all kinds of music. It's time to get my day started!

An arrogant youth

Damn this band is Stygian, and
Brutal. Capital b. I have been texting with a girl I have never met and she seems amazing. I wonder if she reads this heheh. Life is crazy. Could she be the one? I am so scared.

So yob is good. Quite good. Better than ever. And I don't even know them. They are just so polished that it makes me think they couldn't possibly be better :)

Monday 12/5

It is officially the 5th of December, and I am pretty tired. I'm in the middle of laundry, picking up crap all over my place, and trying to forge some semblance of a schedule.

Nuon Shea is on trial and it's crazy about the Khmer Rouge. Check it.

Friday December 2

It has been a long, busy week at work, and I haven't accomplished anything at home! My head has been pretty under control though, which is nice! My headphones broke, so I'll be getting a new pair of those this morning at Bi-Mart.
Hope it's a good weekend that kicks off with a nice Friday at work and a Duck win tonight!

Work today, shouldn't be too bad.

Sunday at Mom's

Listening to a lot of Yes, whom I loaded up on in vinyl this weekend. Also snagged Glassjaw, John Lennon, and other stuff. It's been quite the consumer weekend, with Black Friday and all. Small business Saturday is kinda cool though, eh?
Another day in the life. I feel like wandering Longview a bit and finding a coffee and a place to sit down and chill for a bit on my last day out of Eugene. :) It's been a lot of fun hehe.

Operation mission: the cleanening

Getting my greyhound on, planning on kicking it at my moms today and my dads tomorrow, in Longview and toutle, respectively.

September 11th was 10 years ago, tomorrow. It brings up the concept of war. It makes me wonder about the bush family and how they raised their children. Patton and the sand pebbles, and John Wayne mythology. Church, and the severe delineation of right and wrong. War has always been an amplification of stupid squabbles to me, that should never be brought to a national level.

God, that is a gross simplification, but better cynical and disillusioned than slaughtering innocent people. Then I think of the Chris hedges book, War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, and winder how other families discuss this stuff, or if they do at all. Abstraction is devious, wont to simplification and distance. It has always factored into our thought process though. My brother would read me the world almanac as a child, an we tended to generalize and statisticize to a level of empiricism and extremity that seems quite unnatural. For all of it's accompanying blemishes, this ability to abstract seems so important when we consider the world today, an it seems a shame not to see our leaders discuss it's benefits.

So when we look back at 9/11, and consider the forces that bent our will and anger into all out war on two fronts, you have to wonder. You just do. Wikileaks makes you wonder. The apparent inability of Obama to change who governs our finances is incredibly disturbing. Incredibly. But nearly as or more disturbing is the questions we have to ask ourselves. Could bush have been right about invading Iraq? Not linked at all to 9/11 (most likely), but is there a tie between that and the newest rebellions of the Arab spring? Did we jostle that with the toppling or saddam? We will never truly know, and who is to say yet if things will be better or worse??

Do the power elite think this abstractly? Do they tryst to discuss their maintenance of vast wealth? Would someone actually die if the rich were dethroned? Nobody needs a billion dollars or a private jet. Every single person in the entire world deserves free food, shelter, and medical care. These are what I think about on the days before 9/11. If I think about the specifics, the real people, the families, the heroes who helped (and who are being shafted without help because of medical problems in the aftermath), my eyes well up, and my sincere desires to quantify and abstract fail utterly. My heart goes out to all of you.

Bob Dylan, 7"'s by the dream factory, and some really great reads, including the reluctant fundamentalist (great title that brings to mind the brilliant Abu-Assad film, paradise now, which was discussed as a potential novel to define the post-911 era), and monkeys and apes, a biology tract by uo's own frances white. Abscess?? Recess?

Blogging from the bus I am. Snagged Saul Bellow's Henderson the Rain King from the library's store Secondhand Prose. I journeyed across the street to cd and game exchange where I found a recently marked down version of Roman Polanski's adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.

This weekend, specifically Sunday morning, the tooth I had which needed a root canal, abscessed, giving me a nice-size lump on the left side of my face. I am currently on route to get it checked with the specialist.

At work, a new week

Jere we are, or here I am at least. I'm on an island of film and evolution journals, armed with a monthly subscription to hulu plus and dozens of unwatched films. My goal is to craft a vibrant mental culture on this island that reflects my firm belief that film saved my life. More specifically, ladri di bicyclette, Cesare Zavattini, and Italian neo-realism saved my life. No doubt one's first reaction to this is that it is tedious. It isn't. In fact it is 100% necessary. It is deadly serious, and I type this with a wry, grim smile on my face.

The first few days of 'treatment'

Today I want to discuss the first days of treatment of my 'migraine.'

I went up to Longview for Christmas in 2007 and realized then that this weird headache I had been having was pretty much a constant at that point.

My first day I made an appointment to see someone at the free family clinic. The doctor there checked me out and thought it was probably a migraine and gave me samples of frova, I think. I remember going home and sitting down to relax and taking the frova. I passed for a couple of hours on the sofa and woke up refreshed, but this nagging 'spot' was still there in the background of my head.

I missed work for the first time in quite a while and that's really unfortunate. I was feeling so tired and spent and it kinda drug me down to a cold. I could talk a lot of yesterday.

Very sore, defeated but posi

Blogging from my iPhone has become a regularity.

Originally this was meant to be a way to discuss my migraines and their treatment, but since I have been using the same treatment for quite a while, I haven't really needed to make many updates in that regard, but I feel it is time.

I am still taking 60mg of propranolol daily, in 3 tablets at 20mg a piece. The first time I took this it felt like a clenched fist behind my left eye suddenly opened and relieved weeks of built up pressure. I was sort of prescribed this medication as a last resort as it can make u gain weight in a hurry. I have. Before I started getting migraines I was about 140-145 pounds. I weigh about 200-205 now. That's a hell of a lot of weight, to be sure, but I am healthier now than I think I ever have been in my life and I haven't had a cold or flu since early 2010. That's well over a year!! I am finally getting active again as well and playing lots of basketball and riding my bicycle pretty much everywhere.

The second medication that has become a staple for me is citalopram, which started for a couple of months at 20mg and has been 40mg ever since. About a week ago we were super busy at work, I had refilled my prescription and missed it for a couple of days. I finally took a dose at about 6pm on Friday and couldn't even sleep until late Saturday night. Shows how much the medication has become a part of my routine.

Finally, I am taking a 100mg tablet of amitriptylene every might at bedtime. This medication is great for me and zonks me out every night, allowing me to get on the best schedule of my life.

I take my first dose of propranolol at 845, along with my citalopram. I take my second dose of propranolol at 245pm, usually at about the time I head to lunch. Finally, at 845pm, I take my final dose of propranolol and my dose of amitriptylene. With very little variation, this has been and will continue to be my routine.. Back to work!!

Blogging from phone, from home

It's late! I just realized I need to call my dad. Perhaps the most noticeable downside to blogging on my iPhone is having to learn a new method of creating hyperlinks and simply the difficulty of said transition.

Day Before Work

Kevin McHale will be the coach of the Houston Rockets so we don't have to hear him announce games anymore. Moments like these make finding faith in a creator possible, however fleeting they may be. Perhaps the seemingly intelligent, vegetarian owner of the team, Leslie Alexander, did us all a huge favor so we won't have to hear him talk on air anymore?

An interesting take on the killing of Osama Bin Laden, by a favorite author of mine, Noam Chomsky. Noam, always critically on point, argues that whatever the motive, goal, and accomplishment of the entire thing, this has likely weakened our security.

Joined Tout. Sounds like an interesting way to share impressions.

Tomorrow, I go back to work! Bam. Having four days off has been a beautiful thing. I feel rested and ready.

Intense day

630am: Wake up and wait for my friend John to take me to my first Rotary meeting. The meeting was a lot of information by a lady who does a lot with the culinary school/food preparations for LCC. Informative and impassioned. Rotary seems like a great, positive outlet for a lot of the energies I've saved up. Altruism is such a beautiful thing.

Came home and watched bits of Robert Bresson's Pickpocket. Ominous.

Work starts at 11am. I blew up on Ramona yesterday - this has been an incredibly stressful weeks - and so its still pervades my working mind. She didn't come in until 5pm.

Around 1pm, a nice guy who is caring for his mother comes in and we're chatting. His mom took around 10 pills of depakote (certainly an overdose) about 7 hours before he went in to see her and was told by our pharmacist to seek immediate medical attention and she may have resulting brain damage. Scary moment. Is this the last we'll hear of the problem?

At around 3pm, a regular of ours came in to tell me that my bike had been stolen. This is the bike I've ridden pretty much every day since November when my car got a flat. That's 5+ months of solid riding. I'm going to miss it :/

Long weekend, sans family

I was going to go to Washington and see my family and it all fell through. :/ It will definitely happen in May!

Reflection

My apartment is a mess; it reflects the state of my mind.

Do I finish school? Do I try and write, solely, and shoot for making money that way? Do I bust my ass and apply for grad school? So many questions to parse, so much self-discipline to mete out.

Work, which is my main priority, is pretty good. I am still learning, trying also to bend and mold myself into becoming the best pharmacy technician I can be. It's a living wage, and with raises, I can do pretty good for myself. So do I just stay here and save up money, perhaps trying to finish school, bit by bit? I can write poetry, stories, essays, and even screenplays. I can save and find good film production supplies. I do love Eugene, and what better place to hone myself, my passions. I can find people to be in a band with. I can do this if I really want it. So do I really want it?

I have discovered yet another hero. With such a ridiculous disparity of wealth in the United States, and a whiny fear of taxation, here is why. Guess what?? That top 1% taxation wouldn't effect anyone that I know.

So going up to Washington this weekend. Very excited to see my family. My dad, mom, brother, Ada, and Mike. Maybe a friend or two. A gig for my brother. Taking my bike, so I'm going to journey around town a bit, check out the pawn shops, etc. :) I am kinda sad to miss the Eugene Public Library book sale.

Ok, so according to my blog entry dates, this should be day 3, but since I didn't make an entry yesterday, so be it.

Going to go sell some cds and fart around downtown. I'm going to see Death Cab for Cutie in May, courtesy of my friend Brigette. What Sarah Said, I Will Follow You into the Dark, Passenger Seat, New Year, Brothers On a Hotel Bed, Transatlanticism, and We Looked Like Giants all get the nomination for best song ever.

Day 1

Busy weekend and end of week ahead. Work has been busy. I played basketball at the UO Rec Center for the first time since Christmas break in Washington with my bro and Shane. Every part of my body is sore, and I'm ecstatic. Rumor has it we'll be playing Friday night as well. I hope this works out.

So, Friday night basketball didn't work out. My new friend Niels went awol. Just finished The Mutiny on the Bounty (1935, 7.0/10), which finishes a week full of early Best Picture Oscar winners, starting with the first, the silent Wings (1927, 6.0/10) and including The Broadway Melody (1929, 6.2/10). Thus far I've been underwhelmed, though I found Mutiny on the Bounty to be rather entertaining. Apparently Charles Laughton was known for saying that modern actors give you a photograph and real actors give you an oil painting. He fell into the latter grouping indeed.

Now on to Visconti movied, The Damned.

3.27.11

I will be internetless for a bit, trying to get my finances lined up properly. Please be patient. :)

3.19.11

Haiti, Egypt, Wisconsin, Japan, and now Libya. What a crazy past year this has been. So much going on in the world. Time names their person of the year, while the whole world is burning, and there are many more important things going on.

Personally, I have been trying very hard to break through and become a more organized person, typically in baby steps.

A DAy of Cleaning

Today, I clean. I clean, I organize, I prepare, I push through.

Lots of things happening

A friend is coming Saturday, I'm riding my bike all over the place like a madman, and I have so much cleaning to do that it isn't even funny! Well, it kinda is, just because its preposterous and nearly impossible. hahaha.

Bout to head to the showers to start my day. Going to meet my friend Jenny for coffee and pick up a few things while downtown. Gotta be back in time for pats/jets :)

A Productive weekend

I have a list of things to do by bike today, and I will be leaving before too long to do them. Wish me luck. More playoff football today, and I hope I'm home before dark to get settled in and watch them.

New Year's Resolution 2.0

I wonder if I can actually update this every day? What do you think? I'd like to have an entry every single day, but that requires some motivation and discipline.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary on the Haiti earthquake. My heart goes out to all those affected by such a horrible tragedy.

It's about 650am here, and I'm putting coffee on. I hope I can get a lot done this morning.

Tuesday

Hey, what's up? Past page 200 of Robert Wright's The Moral Animal and I can honestly say it is the most engaging book I've ever read. It is something like the bible of behavior studies. I plan on savoring it multiple times in my life, and it makes me want to apply to grad school in biological anthropology, after I get my bachelor's of course. Now, shower and head to work for an early breakfast. :)

Streamlining the new year for maximum expression

This is the first of many posts about me getting motivated to do good things. I'm sick of half-living. Work starts again tomorrow and I'm excited for it. Let's go! Go ducks as well.
